Jon hit it right on the head when he said his children wouldn't be reading it till they're 14 at least. The same applies to casting for the show. I mean, you can't have an actress of Dany's age in the book in a sex scene with Drogo. That'd get the series blacklisted and canceled all too quickly. There's also subject matter in the later books that lends weight to that point too. But keep reading, it all comes to a head eventually. All the kids in the TV series appear by human 365 day year standards to be a few years older than their ages as given in the book - I conclude and I'm sure someone else could confirm this - that Westeros is on a planet with a longer year, maybe 500-550 Earth days??
